Mats Bergquist is a reclusive artist and spiritual, who plays his game of chess with the slow time of the fulfillment of his works in a study of monastic and bright. The methodology ancient and intensely ascetic that his work will recall how distant countries: those of his early youth spent in Russia, Poland and China, following his father's diplomatic and mother a painter. A fascination with the icons and their religious and political history as well contrasted, a fatal reverence for the passion they arouse and the studies of Japanese Zen undertaken with rigor and conviction led to the creation of his very personal poetry, which, while referring to 'abstraction and minimalism of a certain artistic climate of postwar America, and especially Nordic, fully reflects the tough choices and meanings assets put in place by the artist. Bergquist it creates non-images, without the need for contemporary icons figures, presences that would be obsolete as a result of modern iconoclasm long rarefies to the extreme visual representation. Icons and their significance remains sacred and track the process of realization of an extreme commitment of love, as in an ancient story tells of Swedish Madonnas so consumed by the kisses of the faithful to the point of disappearing, becoming black surface, the absence of signs and color, vibrating table and valiant as a function of the signifier rather than iconographic meaning of the writing surface.
